Upon Returning

The first week back in México felt a bit weird, but we adjusted quickly and it feels good to be back. We realized that we missed a lot of the noises, smells and other things that remind us that we are in México. In general, things are a little less neat and tidy here compared to Canada and it makes things more interesting.

Seven Differences

We have just arrived back in Mexico from our furlough in Canada. A furlough, or at least this furlough, is a time of vacation, work, rest, presentations, visiting, meetings, and family, all mixed up and spread over a two month period. It is a time of coming home and missing home at the same time. A time of easing back into the familiar, yet still feeling out of place.

What’s True for Christ Is True for Us

Did you know that you were crucified on the cross? Were you aware of the fact that you have already been buried in a tomb and later resurrected to a new life?

If you are a Christian, what is true for Christ has become true for you as well. What Christ has accomplished during his mission here on earth has been applied to you – his perfectly lived life; his substitutionary sacrifice; his triumphant resurrection; and his entrance into eternal glory. Faith in Christ brings us into union with Christ. It so closely identifies us with Him, that it can be said that we have died to sin, been resurrected to newness of life, are counted righteous, and accepted into the everlasting kingdom of God.

God At Work

Furlough is on the near horizon. We are a week away from loading kids and suitcases in our van and driving across the country to Puerto Vallarta. After some time with fellow missionaries we will board an airplane and take a direct flight to Edmonton. A few weeks on the prairies and then it is off to Abbotsford, a trip up to Vernon, a quick couple days in Hamilton.

The Birthday Fish

I tried to refuse his offer, but to no avail. So I reluctantly sat down on one of the white plastic stools and he ordered fried fish and totopos for me. When they plunked the plate down in front of me, I turned to Mario and repeated what I had told him earlier, that normally when it is someone’s birthday it’s them that get treated to a meal, not the other way around. He waved me off and pushed the salsa my way.

Yet Not I

Sam is a Jehovah’s Witness who stops by once in a while to chat about Jesus. Usually, at the hour he stops by, I am busy preparing for a gospel message or for a bible study so I have several bibles strewn across the table and I am tapping away on my laptop. For this reason, Sam likes to compliment me on how studious I am.

A Pile of Sins

When I was growing up on the farm, Saturday mornings meant chores, and the one chore we could always count on without fail was cleaning calf pens. The baby calves were kept in wooden, rectangle-shaped pens with a sand bottom and filled with straw and wood shavings. For a month or two, the calves would spend their lives in these pens, making it easier for them to be fed and cared for.

The Truth For a Lie

One of the functions of the Bible is to provide us with a trustworthy framework for life. Like a map we consult when we are lost in a maze of crisscrossing streets, the Bible orients us in the world so we can tell which way is which. Not only does the Bible keep us on the right road, but it ensures that we are not surprised or taken off guard by the sudden turns or dead ends.
