Unto to Us a Light Has Dawned

For my morning devotions I have been meditating on Isaiah’s famous “to us a child is born” prophecy. I wanted to read the prophecy in its context and see what fresh light might be cast over these well-trodden verses. So often we take the familiar words of the Old Testament and transplant them directly into their New Testament application without giving thought to the context in which they first applied. Our application of the words may be correct, but we miss something of their full meaning by pulling them out of the soil in which they existed.

New Year, New Update

It is the middle of winter in our neck of the woods, and we are rather enjoying it. That’s not to say the temperature hasn’t dropped –it has been a couple of degrees overnight on several occasions. There is no heating in the house so if the sun doesn’t come out it stays a tad chilly inside. But we’ll get through it. And we think often of our frozen friends and family up north.

The Acceptance and Rejection of the Messiah

The Christmas season is generally a happy and festive occasion. The narratives of Luke or Matthew are recounted with joy and it warms the heart to think of Joseph and Mary delighting in their newborn. There is also the multitude of angels praising God, the humble shepherds, and the regal wise-men. We celebrate because the long-awaited fulfillment of God’s ancient promise is finally here. Israel’s hope has arrived on the scene. God has come down to dwell with us and be our Saviour. The perfect kingdom of heaven is beginning to overtake the broken kingdom of this world.
