Why did Jesus die on the cross?

There are a few ways to answer this question. We could talk about how Jesus went to the cross to pour out his blood to cover our sins. In a similar vein, we could answer that Jesus went to the cross to take our punishment on himself. We could also trace it back to the commitment of Jesus, as the Son of God, to obey his Father and bring glory to Him through the redemption of many sinners.

Jesus Was In The Boat

One of the harder beliefs to accept, especially for our modern world, is the exclusivity of Jesus Christ – the claim that Jesus is the only way to salvation. In general, people are hesitant to single out just one correct way of doing things, which is fine if we are talking about how to make pancake batter, but decidedly not fine if your diseased body needs a very specific medication.

Why Is Jesus Taking So Long?

I’d rather not wait for the return of Jesus Christ. When Christ returns, he promises to make all things new – perfect and without defect. That means I’ll never have to fight against my own sin ever again. I’ll have a new, perfectly functioning body. It means there will be no more poverty, no more abuse, no more weapons of war, no more pollution, no more sin. I don’t want to wait for that.

Siege Works and a Few Strands of Hair

There is a way to make theology so abstract that it loses all meaning to us. Take for example the essential idea of salvation. We can so easily speak of our salvation without giving much thought to what lies behind it. Within the church we can talk endlessly about salvation and yet fail to think about what we are being saved from, or what we are being saved to. Salvation then becomes a part of our Christian jargon, but it rarely is defined in a tangible, even earthy, way. Of course, this can happen with any number of the creeds and doctrines of the church – they remain floating in the realm of the abstract instead of imbedding themselves deep within the concrete realm of our thinking, actions and imagination.
