The kids were kicking up the dust as they ran around the monkey bars and swings in front of the señora’s house whom we were visiting. Several locals walked by, making discreet comments about the little blonde-haired visitors. One young girl even took out her phone to take a not-so-discreet video of the güeros.

We are currently in the city of Tepic and our time here is reaching its conclusion. To give you an idea of what we have been up to I’ll tell you about some of the activities we have been involved with.
Sunday Services
We have been very thankful that we are able to attend the Sunday worship services here, something not to be taken for granted these days. Over the course of the internship we have been able to be part of: voting and installation of an elder and deacon, a wedding, Lord’s Supper, a fellowship in the park, and a worship service in the park. The last three Sundays, Scott has led the Sunday school service and taught from some of the minor prophets. It definitely takes a lot longer to study for, write, and deliver a message when it is Spanish!

It’s hard to avoid talking about Covid in an update when you recently had the virus.
I recently sick and after three or four days of being sick with fevers and chills and lying in bed most of the day, I suspected it might be Covid. I went to a local hospital to get a test, which was a little uncomfortable, but quick. I got results the next day and was surprised it came back negative. However, I had begun to experience some pain in my chest and had shortness of breath, which made me doubt the accuracy of the test. I also had headaches, fatigue, and strangely, sensitive teeth. So for now I’m assuming it really was Covid.

Here we are once again at the end of one year and standing on the precipice of the next. This transition from what has been to what will be, gives us the opportunity for reflection – to look back on the year that was and try to make some sense of it. Where has God been at work? What have we learned that we can carry with us into the coming year?

I’ll be the first to admit that trusting in God in not an easy thing. It is easy to confess that we trust God, but a whole other thing to actually do it – to step out of the boat and attempt to walk on water. What makes that step easier is knowing that it is possible. Remembering how God was faithful in a previous moment in your life, makes it easier to take another step of faith into unknown waters. So, with the story you’ll find below, I am going to do exactly that – remind myself of how God has been faithful in the recent past. You all can listen in and I hope you are encouraged as much as I am.

On the COVID-19 front, not much has changed here. Towards the beginning of June our state moved from Red to Orange which meant restaurants, cafes, hair salons, churches, etc. were able to open at a limited capacity. This was a nice step forward, but the number cases of the virus continue to go up so we worry that some of that forward progress will be lost. If you ask me what I think is going to happen in the next months, I’d say I have no idea. We pray it gets better, but know it could easily get worse.

Things haven’t changed much since the last time I wrote, about a month ago. We are still waiting at home. We are still waiting to see when things begin to open up and we can resume some of our regular activities. We are still waiting to see what the full impact of COVID-19 will be. We are still waiting to see how this will impact our ministry here.

I remember back in high school I read one of those books where the bad guys threaten world existence with a deadly virus. I think the book was labeled under science fiction. Well, there is nothing fiction about the current pandemic, even if there is no evil empire behind the whole thing (unless you believe some reports). What has been surprising, and rather concerning, is the global scope of COVID-19. “We’re all in this together” is an apt way of putting it.

Two weeks ago I (Scott) was on a video chat with my mom when Annemarie got home from her doctor’s appointment and said, “well, the baby might be born tonight.” I said goodbye to mom, ended the call, and quickly asked Annemarie for more details. According to the doctor, the level of amniotic fluid in the womb had dropped significantly and waiting another two weeks until the due date could put the baby at risk. She would need to be induced that night, or the next morning. After recovering from the suddenness of the news, we both decided that we would wait until the morning. This would give us time to arrange care for the other kids and to get everything ready.

It is the middle of winter in our neck of the woods, and we are rather enjoying it. That’s not to say the temperature hasn’t dropped –it has been a couple of degrees overnight on several occasions. There is no heating in the house so if the sun doesn’t come out it stays a tad chilly inside. But we’ll get through it. And we think often of our frozen friends and family up north.
